Ogoni Tribulation

Paddling down Luubara creek
As I explore the riverine this week
I saw oil spilled like blood
Over the water surface flood
Stench smell of rotten dishes
Flies buzzing on dead fishes
Floating and tossed by the waves
Trees wear out as the ground caves
All over the river bank
The desolation was point-blank

Can Ogoni survive this tribulation
Oil theft and illicit exploration
 Destroying means of livelihood
And exploiting the neighborhood
I saw the monster sudden appear
Like a whale out of the deep I fear
Before me the riddle unfold
Faceless men barging away the black gold

Stop there
Don't even dare
Orderlies at check point
Double cross me at gun point
So did the daylight
 Become my darkest night

Benson Chukwueke

Owerri, Nigeria since 1971. This is how I process and express my innermost cogitations; sitting back with pen and paper, painting words and polishing them until they become flowered verses. I guess for these actions, I could be called a poet or what do think? more…
