Grounded

As youthful as my prime
My memory serves me too well
The shadow of the night shades
dim within our household
When I held my breath till my flesh changed hue
The arguments insist, and persist
Again, I must stealth through the labrynth
To my sister's place of solace
No longer that place of peace
When those walls didn't exist
Within my embrace, I could feel her speak
Will the quarrel end?
Then silence as the dawn
at sylvan Lake
When fish jumped to feast
and the birds would sing in jubilee
And yet
I couldn't seem to marathon fast enough
over that steeplechase
I was grounded
Then I see a man
Standing at the base of the stairwell
Duffel bag in tow
The door unlocked with an amplified sound
as church bells ping ponging within my ears
I peer eagerly around the corner
as if I was waiting for Santa to eat those cookies
Then I was exposed as a deer in the forest
within the sights of the gun
Eerily silent
We locked eyes
Then my first dose of paralysis
The front door opens
We both stand firm
Stand mute
I forgot how to speak
The shadow of the night
Wisped to my heart
Befall my soul
The five seconds seemed like millenia
Then about-face the door closed
I stood grounded
The tears tap danced necromancy
as I receeded to my bedroom
Unable to sleep
The pain all consuming
Dare I wake up
How do I explain this to my little sister.
If I could just tell her
Tell her what I had seen
All we wanted was peace
So sis'
This piece I give you
This piece of me
I will never forget
The day I stood grounded
With my pinichio legs
and brick payless
Kneeless pj's
and tube socks
I protected you
and consumed the abyss of despair that night
So that you could live the days next
Blind to that painted image of Melancholy
that was yesterday
As it is now today
I stay grounded
so perhaps your strength can reach for me

About this poem

It's unfortunate when you've lost one parent and then the next through their own choice. My sister and I have always been very close. Battling our demons and striving our best to be a better emulation of our parents. My sister went on do be successful, I am still finding my way. I have taken a lot of pain and burden from my sister so that she could move forward. It is now time for me to release. So release I shall.
