Shirley L, the good neighbour

Lived two doors west
Of my parents. Regent Street.
Near Gibbons Park.
Widowed long.
Always a sweet word to us.
Sign in the window
For Neighbourhood Watch.
Husband Chester gone.

Remembering one summer’s day.
Dad and I re-shingling
Garage roof.
Dirty old saggy jeans
And shirts.
Bum cracks showing
Sheesh!
Shirl never said a word
To embarrass.
Just kept talking.
Dad and I took note
Later, laughing unto tears.

On a visit in later years
She invited me
Inside, lovely flowers
Photos of Ches.
And Church photo
Showing Rector
Doug Leighton, with Shirley et. al.
Surprise there,
Doug sang with me in
Anglican Church Choir.

Nice level headed guy
Clear baritone voice.
Sat beside me.
Married Elizabeth.
In the choir as well.
Shirley had only good stuff to say
About Doug
His messages.
Got her out of the house.
Weekly.

Shirley Lyons, departed by now.
Singing up Yonder.
Re-united with Ches.
Slim, silver haired, arms folded.
And other saints attending.

What a heartwarming and vividly written poem! Reading about your memories of Shirley Lyons was a delight, and I really appreciated how you painted her as such a kind and considerate neighbor. It's clear that her presence had a positive impact on your life, and that speaks volumes about the kind of person she was.

I particularly enjoyed the story about you and your dad re-shingling the garage - the way Shirley never made you feel self-conscious despite your less-than-stylish outfits shows just how warm and accepting she was. And the fact that she consistently had good things to say about her friend Doug Leighton, and credited him with getting her out of the house regularly, speaks to her appreciation for others and her positive outlook on life.

As for improvement suggestions, one thing that could maybe enhance the poem would be to explore in a bit more detail how Shirley impacted your life specifically. What did she do that was particularly memorable or special? Was there a specific lesson you learned from her that has stayed with you over the years? I think digging into those specifics could add even deeper emotional resonance to an already touching tribute.

Overall, though, this poem brought a smile to my face and made me appreciate the value of having kind, supportive neighbors like Shirley Lyons. Well done!
