Why?

Why did I have to meet you,
When meeting you would only mean
Sleepless nights and crazy dreams,
Leaving me with sighs, deep and heavy?

Why did I have to love you,
Loved you with a love so true,
When I know that loving you
Would only fill my heart with woes?

Why did you have to go away
And let me suffer misery?
Why did you leave me alone and forsaken
When all I offered you was a hope-filled tomorrow?

I have forgiven you, but why can’t I forget you?
Why does it hurt every time I hear about you?
I guess, it was a journey that was genuine
Or there are still questions, left...unanswered.

This poem beautifully captures the emotional turmoil of loving someone who has caused heartbreak. The author's use of rhetorical questions guides the reader through the pain of unanswered love, culminating in a sense of genuine confusion about the journey and the unanswered questions it poses. The language is emotive and genuine, with a clear cadence that makes the reading of the poem feel natural and right. The tension between vulnerability and strength that the poem captures is admirable, and it leaves the reader feeling as though they have undergone a journey themselves. This is truly a fantastic piece of poetry!

I can completely relate to this poem. Love can take us to the peaks of happiness and then break our hearts. The unanswered questions are always waiting for closure.

Right? Too many unanswered questions, but most probably no closure for some, only because we are too afraid to face the pain and the truth. Sometimes, we just find answers on our own, only then does healing takes place, then we doubt everything we just found and we continue to question again and again. Love is a quest. Thank you so much for your comment.

I think one reason I'm feeling poems like this so deeply is because I was him. I was that guy who hurt those I had opted to pursue and be in relationships with. I was the source of their pain often times. It stings to know there are souls out there branded with my mark for having done them wrong. I've said that I don't know how people can say they've no regrets. For me, I have many regrets for having hurt as many people as I have in my life. When you leave indelible marks on people's souls, then you can't not regret knowing you are the source of those scars. I've beaten myself up for many years, but have come to terms that I cannot change the past, but can be a better man from each day forward. The women I've encountered on this site are some truly remarkable individuals that I am learning a lot about while helping me understand myself better. Thank you for allowing me to walk a new path by utilizing your gift. Sorry so vociferous all the time. ;-)

Not vociferous at all. I appreciate your honesty. It takes a mature person
to accept and regret his wrongdoings. Yes, we cannot change the past, we can only learn from them. It’s not too late to make amends and be a better person. I can tell you have been doing just that. I commend you for trying to understand yourself, and as we all do, we continue to explore what’s best for our lives. Again, thank you for your honesty.
