Mr. Great Guy

When we first met I fell right into your trap,
I couldn’t believe that an angel fell straight into this great guys lap.
You told me you loved me, and my heart all but stopped,
But years later this great guy got dropped.
Between then and now, a lot has changed,
Some good and some bad, but some of them strange.

Did we drift apart?   Well of course we did,
Let’s start with those times you spent with him.
While this great guy worked sun up to sun down, and even more,
To provide for you, and your kids that I greatly adore.
You blamed me for lack of affection and begged my forgiveness,
But what was I to do? My defense was your sickness.

You got diagnosed with some serious and life threatening things,
A back surgery too and mostly bedridden.
Even though my heart was crushed,
This great guy said you were forgiven.
How could I have said goodbye, for you and the kids clearly needed me,
To just walk away on them would be father number three.
Most people would say that’s not the right answer, and it’s unhealthy
But they don’t know what I felt deep down inside… I thought I had a family.

Now the kids are out of school and moved on to new homes,
Then you return to work but what for?
I’ve taken care of everything up till then,
it must be to cover your one bill for sure.
Its been over a year now,
and I hoped things would get better.
I begged for you to come home,
Instead all I got was a break up letter.
Now there is no going back,
Not to what we used to be.
Now this great guy is stuck here all alone,
In pain, misery, and a broken dream.

You said I didn’t come see you enough,
In all our time apart.
But from the moment that you left, you were gone,
I knew it in my heart.
You also need to consider all that went on,
Because thats not a fair thing to say.
From our sicknesses to no car, weather to other things,
Also our schedules conflicted right down to the day.
Now really think about what you put on me,
You never came out here for me but only for your mail.
So your to blame for the same thing,
So where the hell did I fail?

The next thing you said was you want to get married,
Your right that ones on me.
But that makes no sense,
Who else do you see.
  There has to be someone,
If not present then in mind.
You can tell me what you want,
But the truth I will find.
  And what is marriage,
So long as we are together?
Not to belittle it, I know it’s value,
But it’s just a piece of paper.

I know you remember the years I gave up, all that I sacrificed, and all I did,
The nights without eating, bed baths and such.
With this great guys own pains locked up inside,
I never realized I was taking on to much.
You know your not the only one to blame,
I started to drift away, and became so blue.
I was so naive to think all would be okay with us,
Looking back at it now I know I also failed you.
We both know that our separate ways will change things all again,
And we truly know that we simply can’t be friends.

Over a decade now and I feel it’s all been one long lie,
The only heart felt thing you’ve said is goodbye.

Love always, Mr. Great Guy
