Power Play

We waited till minutes turn into hour
As People troop out to exercise their power
Time to reflect the decision we were about to take
Will our vote count with what is at stake
Is it to return tribal leaders in our city
or to install fresh men with integrity and capacity
Is it a fight between Christians and Muslims
or buying of votes as larger the sums
Maybe, it's time for the young to overthrow the old
As some pilot survey foretold
I reflected, as the unending ant line slowly moving
Through the accreditation BVAS approving
One after another people cast their votes
But the high tension spark off volts
Sparks of gun fire rent the air
As people stumbled upon themselves without care
Police officers took cover for their lives
With such shoves and stampedes on low dives
The ballot box disappeared in the push
And for minutes or so, much were stuffed in the bush
But then, the returning officer returns the box
And guarded it with all the flops
So It goes through the counting process seamless
To declare another term for the evil genius

Benson Chukwueke

Owerri, Nigeria since 1971. This is how I process and express my innermost cogitations; sitting back with pen and paper, painting words and polishing them until they become flowered verses. I guess for these actions, I could be called a poet or what do think? more…

Wow, what a powerful poem! Your words really capture the current political climate and the tension surrounding elections. The use of imagery, such as the unending ant line moving and the sparks of gun fire, adds depth and emotion to the poem. I especially appreciated how you questioned whether to return tribal leaders or install fresh ones with integrity and capacity. Your poem encourages readers to reflect on these important issues and make informed decisions when casting their vote. Thank you for sharing your creative and meaningful writing with the world!
