The barefoot boy

Through small holes in the billet
walls
thin rays of light caress the face of
the Barefoot boy

Outside empty bottles and jars
mingle with abandoned old cars.
Stray cats roam the street while
tall uncut grass stands firm in the
concrete

It was 3am when I heard you call
followed by the sound  of your
footsteps running down the hall
then one turn of the key and your
spirit soars free

You’re running so fast as if your
life depended on it. Your bare feet
slapping against the hard ground

Your hair dances on your head as
you race down , Gillard Drive past
the stray cats and the dusty grey
billet's

Past the Cable Bar and the antique
store  and onto the sandy  beach
where the waves come out to greet
you.

You’re head first into the dark cold
water emerging like a sea god,
unlocked,  cleansed and smiling
like the sun

Reflection

We tend to remember moments like
these and we forget the mundane but
life goes by so fast you hardly even
notice

So take heed!
Take heed!
The gods only offer
You one life

About this poem

Poem is about my grandson who has Lennox Gastaut Syndrome. He had been in and out hospital for years. He hadn’t walked for over 6 months then out of nowhere he changed. We brought him to Ballyhornan and he was doing things we only dreamed about. We walked the whole way to the beach. The poem is about that morning that was magical.
