On the Petals of My Heart

Eucharia Nwoke 1994 (Abeokuta)

The butterfly flutters from flower to flower,
In quest of the purest of nectar.
The petals blaze in their glory
Heralds of a union, the source of new life.

The fruit needs its flower,
the butterfly the petals.
One to voyage, the other to guide.

One then to its wings.
The other onto its stock.
Two destinies yet one purpose.
Thus
Like the rustling of a soft wind on the leaves
and the lightness of a butterfly,
you perched on the delicate petals of my heart.
Tickling joy and revelations of could bes were instant.

But sooner than known,
for fear of being ensconced in the softness
of my folds -
to sip from the sweetness of my nectar-
you fluttered off as from a poisoned pool.

The memories
fit to be preserved in every breathe,
now till eternity-
never to be relinquished.
