The Television

Michael Ullom 2004 (Fayetteville)

For the past few days
I have felt no fear.
I haven't felt
much at all.
It feels as though
I live behind a
fancy screen,
with troubles not
my own.
What if I’m
distant and tired
because I’m
bored.
Jaded from a
life that I’m not
proud to call
my own.
It explains why
during the night
I dream of so many
beautiful things,
that I won’t find
for another episode,
or perhaps I’m on the
wrong season?
Either way,
I must say,
“oh, the screenwriter’s
a dreary man!”
I thought that
my mind could
be bleak as
hell,
but what has
this man been through
to write a story
so horrible?
When I work
I feel no gain.
What I’ve been gifted
I don’t deserve.
When I’m hungry
food disgust me,
but once I eat:
instantly full.
I talk a lot for
hating my voice,
but never enough to
say something meaningful.
I procrastinate a lot
for someone
as passionate
as I.
I must be stupid
for wasting my willpower
dreaming instead of
acting.
At least I know,
there is a flame
in my heart that
burns with love.
It is the only
feeling so,
it must be that
love is strongest.
Yes, love is
the mightiest
of the human
passions.
This is why
I think sometimes
I live behind a
screen.
A silly little show
switching between
anxieties
at every button press.
A silly little show,
with a single hook
to keep me here:
love.
