Between dusk and dawn

Michael Ullom 2004 (Fayetteville)

Between the time
you lay in bed

and the first cracks
of weary eyes

are the times the
world is truly
Alive.

There is:
Magic,
Beauty,
And laughter;

The sun shines
brightest with
your back turned.

And the stillness you always feel
has been lost to the joys of dreams,
what distinguishes what is real
more than your dependence on dreams.

We are a plant
ever reaching
towards the sun:

stretching, pulling,
bending, defying.

We exhaust to
live and feel.

I'd rather be a
painting on a wall,

immortalized,
passionate dyes

that live without flesh,
And bring to your eyes

dreams from the other side
of sunshine and darkness.

Between dusk and dawn
Earth is still aflame;
the sun's never gone
just dreaming all the
same.
