MIDA'S MISFORTUNE

MIDA'S MISFORTUNE

           ------------------------------------

Midas the famous king of Italy,

Was much miser and madly greedy,

He was neither sound nor bold,

He wanted but only gold.

Once he passed along a river,

Suddenly his feet began to shiver,

There he saw good Lord's face,

 And asked him for his Godly grace,

" Good God give me a thing,"

Said the greedy selfish King,

The thing which I touch and hold,

Should change into pure gold".

Hearing Midas the good God said,

" Thy idea is wrong and bad;

Gold can bring thee no happiness,

It won't help thee in thy distress."

"The substance of life is feeling of pleasure,

No one can steal it no one can measure;

I accept thy prayer and now behold,

Whatever thou touch will change into gold."

Hearing so his heart thus pounds,

The King's joy knew no bounds;

So he tried to test his boon,

He touched all the things in the room.

He walked through lounges and lanes,

Touched and felt all the iron chains;

All the chains turned into gold,

Everything he touched had become gold.

He was happy and happily told,

"Everywhere I see but only gold".

He felt thirsty his tongue did falter,

He asked for some drinking water.

Now his life was at the stake,

He had made a terrible mistake;

To him life became a hell,

He began to cry and yell.

His life became gloomy and grim,

His greed brought a curse on him,

He wept all day and night,

Thus he lost all his might.

"Alas, Midas be not hopeless,

God will help thee in thy distress,

Do but repentance for thy greed,

Then only wilt thou be freed."
