“Hangs Heavy”

The cavernous growl
of the black howler
brings you to mind…
Deep and guttural,
it hangs heavy in wet air-
Stirring giant jungle leaves
to loosen from
the crowned canopy,
Shattering bright birdsongs
to free-fall into the abyss,
Startling creatures of
the red earth
to dig in, and disappear
Deep and guttural,
my memory of you
hangs heavy.
Despite its burden, and
fearing it will fade-
my mind of prehensile
grooves and ridges
grips tightly
