Hangs Heavy”

“Hangs Heavy”

The cavernous growl
of the black howler
brings you to mind…
Deep and guttural,
it hangs heavy in wet air-
Stirring giant jungle leaves
to loosen from
the crowned canopy,
Shattering bright birdsongs
to free-fall into the abyss,
Startling creatures of
the red earth
to dig in, and disappear
Deep and guttural,
my memory of you
hangs heavy.
Despite its burden, and
fearing it will fade-
my mind of prehensile
grooves and ridges
grips tightly

About this poem

I had the great privilege to experience the sight and sound of the howler monkey on a visit to Costa Rica. Its deep, guttural growl reminded me of memories we have that we would be better offer forgetting but that for various reasons, we can not.
