Gestating for CGA (hard road)

Douglas Blair 1951 (London)

Gestating for CGA.

He would be attending
The Big Night.
Got a couple of invitations.
The Group had once been
So productive, attractive.
Second and third years
University Maths and Sciences.
Queens University, Kingston.
He was single. Age 28.
Trim build.
Honed by a little racketball.
More than dedicated
To his chosen field.
Accountancy.
Audit.
Midnight oil.
Maybe someday
Business development
Decisions and Counsel.
The firm had been
His thirteenth shot
With resume, drilling questions
45 minute interview.
(With two senior partners
One straight as an Arrow.
Other flamboyant, heavy drinking
Loud ties, for the retaining, grooming
Of clientele. They seemed to buy it.
Former guy would oversee all
The real working team.
Danny had landed on that team.
Bettered his chances.)
And the hours got crazy.
Sleep deprived
Eyes, pained and blurred
From the reading, invoices,
bank statements.
Reconciliation sheets.
Danny was good.
But quiet.

Now about the Party.
Arrived 35 minutes after the hour
On the formal invitation.
Lots to talk about.
To drink.
To laugh.
To snack.
To recall.
To re-ignite.
Danny drew a line
To a shaded corner.
Seat beside Irene Parkwood.
Had two classes with her 3rd year.
Unmarried.
Good on the piano.
Volleyball.
Thin and gangly.
She taught Kindergarten.
Could gentle down
Any Mom or Dad.
The conversation
Surprised Danny.
Couple of old mates
Ambled over, sneering.
“Hey you wall-flowers
Get with it
Want a couple of rum ‘n Cokes?
Bring on a buzz
Bring back the laughs.”
But Danny had Irene’s number.
Dinner and a flick next Friday.
If he really pushed for the coming week.
Looking at a mid-sized bakery
And a high-end Ladies accessories shop up-town.
CGA…CGA…CGA
NUMBERS, CLUTTERBUCK and WINDER.
Danny Winder?
