Mending wall : a continuation

But as I stand here, looking at the wall
That separates our properties, I can't help but think
Of all the things that it keeps out and in
And wonder if it's worth the time and effort.

The wall is a constant reminder of our differences,
Of the apple trees and the pine, and the fact
That we can never truly be one, united
But always separate, always divided.

I watch my neighbor as he works,
His rough hands grasping the stones,
His face set in determination,
And I can't help but feel a twinge of envy.

He seems content with the wall,
With the boundaries it creates,
But for me, it brings nothing but discomfort.

Perhaps it's because I see the potential
For something greater, something more,
If only we could tear down this wall
And learn to live and work together.

But for now, I'll keep my silence,
And let him say his words,
For as long as the wall stands,
"Good fences make good neighbors"

And yet, I can't help but wonder,
If that's truly what we are,
Good neighbors? Or just two strangers
Living side by side, separated by a wall.

About this poem

The poem continues the theme of arbitrary separations between humans, as present in Robert Frost's "Mending Wall" published in 1914. It explores the idea of a physical wall separating two properties and how it serves as a constant reminder of differences between neighbors. The speaker expresses envy towards their neighbor's contentment with the wall and boundaries it creates, but finds it uncomfortable. The speaker suggests that tearing down the wall could lead to something greater, a chance to coexist and work together. The poem also questions the nature of being a good neighbor and if the wall makes them strangers living side by side.
