Kids
know right away when they have got you
wrapped around their little finger
"Mum, you know I love you...
very...very much"
"Ok ...sure"
You wouldn't have said that if
I hadn't given in to your tantrums
when you hurled yourself across the room
mindful of staring strangers
who see inept motherfood pesonified
faces contorted in gestures of disaproval
aloofly twisting their faces in your direction
as if to say " You dont deserve this child"
If only they knew
how content, a little child can get
when they know, they're strutting their stuff
in front of a strange stage
in public for their perusal
and mother's cringe
for fear that society will chastise them
for failing their children!
About this poem
This poem reflects my feelings when my children were much younger and I used to take them with me to the shops, sometimes they would play up, my youngest in particular would throw tantrums, unbeknownst to us, he was deaf due to impacted wax in his ears.
