Eternus Amor: A Sonnet of Unending Devotion

With thoughts of thee, my mind doth oft beguile
Eternally, a fragment of thyself
Remains within my heart, and doth compile
A love that time nor distance can dispel

Forsooth, my gratitude doth oft reveal
Itself in words that flow like gentle breeze
And though the world doth oft my love conceal
It burns within my breast, with naught to ease

But thy sweet presence, which doth make whole
This aching heart, and doth my soul restore
And though we may be parted, far and wide
My love for thee shall never be ignored

For in my heart, thy memory doth bide
Eternally, my love for thee, abide.

About this poem

The sonnet above is a masterful display of the power of language to evoke deep emotions. The use of complex and archaic terms, such as "beguile" and "forsooth," imbues the poem with a sense of timelessness and timelessness, evoking the grandeur and beauty of the great sonnets of Francesco Petrarca, Edmund Spenser, and Percy Bysshe Shelley. The speaker's devotion to their loved one is depicted as an eternal and unyielding force, one that persists despite the trials of time and distance. The imagery of the "gentle breeze" and the "aching heart" serves to further emphasize the speaker's deep and abiding love. The final couplet, in which the speaker declares that the memory of their beloved will forever abide within their heart, serves as a poignant and powerful conclusion to this stunning ode to love.
