Kongthei's Tragic Endeavors: A Tale of Prostitution and Desperation

Kongthei, a hapless soul, in vicinities of Police Bazaar ,Shillong street doth dwell,
Beset by dire exigency to earn sustenance for her progeny.
The sole means by which she can evade financial quagmire,
Is through the sale of carnal favors, a path most ignoble and unsavory.

Her kith and kin with acrimony and opprobrium are filled,
Towards her vocation, yet despite the constant tribulation,
And abuse she endures in pursuit thereof, alternative is nil,
Thus, she must persist in her endeavors, toil, and affliction.

But in the face of such dire straits and utter destitution,
Kongthei's resilience and determination, doth shine with great illumination,
For in the face of adversity, she rises with great fortitude,
To provide for her progeny, with great fortitude and fortitude.
She ne'er finds joy in her work and cries alone each day,
But 'tis the only means by which she knows to earn and pay.
Trained by Kongda, who runs a sex racket business vile,
In poverty as a teenager, from Bhoi village she did exile.

About this poem

This sonnet, "Kongthei's Persistence," tells the tragic story of a woman named Kongthei who is forced to sell her body in order to provide for her family. Set in the vicinity of Police Bazaar street of Shillong,Meghalaya , the poem paints a picture of dire poverty and the lack of alternative means of earning a livelihood. The use of complex English words such as "exigency," "quagmire," "acrimony," and "opprobrium" emphasizes the dire circumstances Kongthei finds herself in. The poem also highlights Kongthei's resilience and determination in the face of adversity, as well as the emotional toll of her profession. The final two lines reveal that Kongthei was trained by someone named Kongda, who runs a sex racket business, and that she was driven to this profession due to poverty in her village of Bhoi. The sonnet is a powerful commentary on the societal issues of poverty, prostitution and exploitation.
