Remembered Felicities: A Soliloquy on Lost Childhood

Oh, how the memories of my own childhood haunt me. Intermittently, I am assailed by a smidgen of dejection upon perceiving a progeny, as during my own juvenescence, I was never honored to partake in the felicities of a childhood.
I see the joy and innocence in their eyes, and it serves as a stark reminder of all that I missed out on. The laughter, the play, the sense of wonder and exploration. All of these things were denied to me, and now, as I stand here, I cannot help but feel a twinge of jealousy and regret.
I cannot help but wonder what my life would have been like had I been granted the opportunity to experience the simple pleasures of childhood. Would I be a different person? Would I be more content? More at peace?
But alas, it is too late for me now. The past cannot be changed, and I am left to dwell on what could have been. But perhaps, in some small way, I can help to make sure that the progeny I see before me will not have to suffer the same fate as I. And in that, I may find some solace.

About this poem

The soliloquy is an emotional reflection on the speaker's past, specifically their missed opportunity to experience the felicities of childhood. The speaker expresses feelings of dejection, jealousy and regret as they see the joy and innocence in the eyes of progeny, which serves as a reminder of all that they missed out on. The speaker also muses on how their life may have been different if they had been given the opportunity to experience the simple pleasures of childhood, and ultimately concludes that although it is too late for them, they may find solace in ensuring that the progeny before them will not have to suffer the same fate. The soliloquy effectively evokes emotions of empathy and nostalgia, and it paints a picture of a person who is still haunted by their past and longing for something they never had.
