Elysian Escarpment: A Poetic Ode to Laitlum Canyons

Mawphniang Napoleon 1993 (Ri Bhoi)

Precipitously perched atop the Eastern Khasi Hills of Shillong,
Laitlum Canyons is an arcane and sequestered spot
In the mountainous state of Meghalaya, where long
The name Laitlum, meaning "end of hills," is apt.

Upon arriving at this peak, one is greeted
With vistas of grandeur and winding stairways
That meander down to the valley, replete
With verdant greenery and picturesque ways.

The gorges are awe-inspiring, and the view
Is sublime, a testament to nature's art
A place where one can escape the world anew
And find solace in the beauty of the heart.

So, if you seek a place of serenity
Laitlum Canyons is the perfect place for thee.

About this poem

The sonnet above describes the beauty and seclusion of Laitlum Canyons, situated in the Eastern Khasi Hills of Shillong, Meghalaya. The use of words such as "arcane" and "secluded" convey the obscure and rarely visited nature of the location. The winding stairways and gorges are described as "serpentine" and "awe-inspiring" to further emphasize the grandeur of the site. The valley below is described as "replete" with verdant greenery to convey its abundance of lush vegetation. The overall message of the sonnet is that Laitlum Canyons is a place of serenity and natural beauty, a perfect escape from the world.
