The Dolorous State of Captivity
In fetters bound, my spirit doth endure,
A dolorous state without liberty,
With countenance wan, and joyless, obscure,
Efforts in vain, to break my captivity.
Assiduous endeavors I have made,
To cast aside this bitter yoke of life,
But fate doth mock, my struggles unafraid,
And in my chains, my soul doth wail and strife.
Existence proves too formidable a foe,
To relinquish its acrimony so,
And I am left to suffer and to know
The bitter pang of freedom's overthrow.
But still I hope, that one day I shall see,
A brighter dawn, and sweet autonomy.
About this poem
This sonnet paints a poignant picture of the human condition, wherein one's spirit is enchained and deprived of the inalienable right of autonomy. The use of imagery such as "fetters bound" and "dolorous state" effectively convey the sense of despair and hopelessness experienced by the speaker. The repeated use of words such as "bitter" and "acrimony" underscore the theme of the poem, which is the bittersweet nature of existence and the unyielding nature of fate. The final couplet, however, offers a glimmer of hope, with the speaker expressing a steadfast belief in the possibility of a brighter dawn and the eventual attainment of autonomy. The sonnet is masterfully crafted, with an intricate rhyme scheme and a deft use of complex vocabulary that adds depth and nuance to the overall meaning. more »
