Elysium's Eden: Mawlynnong's Pristine Beauty

Mawlynnong, a village quite immaculate,
Renowned throughout the land for its pure charm,
Aptly named God's Own Garden, state,
Where fruit orchards flourish, streams effervesce,
And evergreens and swaying palms adorn
The well-preserved traditions of the Khasis,
Providing picturesque stage, newly born
On edge of Meghalaya's southern passes.

The Nohwet Living Root Bridge, a sight
To see, created through generations' toil,
By interweaving Ficus Elastica roots just right,
A staple of Khasi architecture's style,
Helping villages connect, trade and traverse,
Built in harmony with nature, strength to gain,
And cool, gushing waters to dip and immerse.

About this poem

The sonnet paints a vivid and picturesque portrait of Mawlynnong, an immaculate village known for its pure charm. The imagery of the fruit orchards, effervescent streams, and evergreens, coupled with the mention of the well-preserved traditions of the Khasis, creates a sense of idyllic serenity. The Nohwet Living Root Bridge serves as a symbol of the harmony between human ingenuity and natural beauty, as well as the importance of tradition and connection within the community. The phrase "generations' toil" highlights the effort and determination it took to create such an impressive feat of engineering, and the idea of the bridge "getting stronger as they grow older" adds an element of timelessness and resilience to the overall tone of the sonnet. The final line, inviting the reader to take a dip in the cool, gushing waters, adds a sense of invitation and enticement, inviting the reader to experience the beauty of Mawlynnong for themselves.
