Concordance at Nongriat: A Sonnet of Arboreal Bridgeways"
Bridgeways wrought from arboreal giants' roots
Exemplify concordance with nature's realm
An epic descent awaits at Nongriat's
Bifurcated bridge, with steps and sights to overwhelm
Enigma of Meghalaya, root bridges old
An integral part of Khasi life of yore
When trekking through dense woods and rivers bold
Was quotidian, like an open door
Nongriat's bridge, unique in multi-tiered form
A masterpiece of botanical art
Years passed before it reached its present norm
And now, a tranquil pool nearby to start
A rest and repose, surrounded by rock walls
And food stalls to keep hunger at bay, it calls
About this poem
The sonnet elegantly portrays the grandeur of root bridges in Meghalaya, India and the harmony it exemplifies between the Khasi tribe and nature. The use of words such as "Bridgeways wrought" and "concordance with nature's realm" adds a sense of reverence and admiration for the root bridges, while the use of words like "epic descent" and "bifurcated bridge" imbues a sense of adventure and awe at the unique architectural structure. The reference to the root bridges as an "enigma" and "integral part of Khasi life of yore" highlights the deep cultural significance of these root bridges and the ancient tradition of navigating through dense woods and tumultuous rivers. The imagery of "tranquil pool" and "rock-encircled" adds a sense of serenity and peacefulness, the perfect ending to a journey through the root bridges. more »
