Elevation of the Heart

My heart doth swell with veneration,
For you, my love, my heart's desire.
Your essence holds the power to exalt,
And elevate me, to set my soul on fire.

Yet trepidation also doth reside,
For in your grasp, my heart may be rent.
Your presence in my life, metamorphic,
Invigorates my spirit, fanning embers spent.

Your contemplation brings solace to my mind,
And in adversity, your touch is balm.
But as you elevate, fear doth remind,
That losing you would cause my heart to qualm.

Be cognizant, my love, that I am yours,
Forevermore, through all life's vicissitudes.
With boundless love, I'll face all life's chores,
To be by your side, my heart, my solace.

About this poem

The sonnet is an expression of deep and complex love, utilizing a rich vocabulary and traditional sonnet structure. The speaker's heart "swells with veneration" for their beloved, and they describe their love as having the power to "exalt" and "elevate" them, as well as "set their soul on fire." However, they also acknowledge the fear and "trepidation" that comes with loving someone so deeply, the fear of losing their love and having their heart "rent. " The speaker's love is described as transformative, "metamorphic" and it invigorates their spirit, fanned embers of their soul. The mere contemplation of the beloved brings solace to the speaker's mind and touch is balm in times of adversity. The last lines convey the speaker's unwavering love and commitment to their beloved, through all of life's challenges and vicissitudes, willing to face all life's chores as long as they have the solace of being by the beloved's side.
