Empathy Unexpected (for homeless ones)

Douglas Blair 1951 (London)

Why am I in their corner?

Homeless people, hoboes

Tent City folk.

City must recover the land.

Many see shiftlessness

And danger.

Police passing by.

Barber Collins on hire

And report.

Water, warmth, waste?

But I have met some

And talked.

They are sincere

And problems not far fetched.

COVID displacement.

Employments closed.

Mortgages pressing in.

Rent impossible.

Simple turn of the screw.

Mental faculties tested.

Now, presto, homeless.

Coins tossed in their box.

Grocery cart stuffed

With “valuables”.

A CITY coming to be.

Mourning dove overhead.

Could it have been me?

They desire place, peace, purpose.

City has chances here

To honour and help.

Common folk as well

Must not forget the

Little kids.

Who need more

Than some gymnasium floor.

And Mother in tears.
