ARRIVAL OF A STRANGER

HON. CHIBUZO ANIWETALU 1992 (PORTHARCOURT)

Title: ARRIVAL OF A STRANGER

Farmers are wailing.
Fishermen have suddenly grown poor.
Hunters are hungry and hailing.
The games are gone for sure.
Forests    turned   deserts.
Chrysanthemum, lotus, cactus and daffodils said they (part  of line 6)can’t bear it no more.

Graze men have gone crazy in search of vegetation.
There are no ripe fruits for the harvesters.
Famine is a household name in the nation.
Black fume   consumes our investors.
And our economy like trees has fallen.
Because global warming just arrived.

Sad notes of melancholy trail and wail from the chirps (part of line 13)of birds,
from long distances far away.
They’re sad because they’ve lost their homes, mothers (part of line 15)and nests to girls,
Who caused logging, and felling, it’s sad to say.
They’re sad because whirlwinds and storms came to (part of line 17)torment them.
They’re sad because they were beaten by acid rains.

Zebras, Buffalos and antelopes were common sights, (part of line 19)yesterday.
But the forests were razed by fire.
And there are no green plants in our farms, today.
Because chemicals like parasites dealt with them in (part of line 22)ways that we can’t admire.
And our soils are no more nutritious.
All  because  global warming visited us, a while ago.

But we can tell him that he has overstayed his welcome (part of line 25)by dusting off our old bicycles.
But we can chase him away with afforestation, (part of line 26)reforestation and organic farming.
