Arranged Marriage Revisited

Why chase love down with shackles?
Let them dance, let them sing
Why chase love down with shackles?
When they’d fall into each other's arms anyway
Let them spin.

Duty doesn’t owe them what they’re lacking
Give them space, let them grow
Duty doesn’t die in the face of laughter
It comes for free
Just thought you should know

Duppatas tied as yokes for they are oxen,
together carrying the burden of life
They’re not beasts to be reared with fear
So let them hold hands as they face a world of strife

So why go chase love down with shackles?
Let them go, set them free.
Why chase love down with shackles?
Just let them live, let them be.

About this poem

In honor of cuffing season (primarily December) in India I wrote this poem to poke at the pressures around it culturally and vent in a way that hopefully can give my unmarried peers a couple verses of mutual recognition and catharsis.
