Will I ever again?
GIDRAF MWANGI 1992 (Murang'a)
I am down and out
Mired in the mud of misery
Trodden by the heel of life
Crushed by the stone of despair
I have been bleached of the taste of life
My sight fogged by tears of grief
And my hearing lost in loud wailing
I don't know whether I will live again
Whether I will ever feel joy
Or whether I will remember their memory
Will I ever laugh again;
To a hilarious joke?
A funny cartoon?
Or just by being tickled?
Will I ever smile;
To another person's silly gaffe?
In reply to another smile?
Or to myself from an inside joke?
Will I ever wake up to fresh angelic voices
The beautiful choir music of Libera?
Will I enjoy my midday meal
To the rocking beats of rock?
Will I ever again enjoy a soulful evening
By the heavenly voice of Celine Dione?
Drift off to a beautiful sleep
By the soothing melody of Enya?
Will I ever again enjoy a novel?
A whodunit like Agatha?
A spy like Kellerman?
Or a scientific Enders Game?
Will I ever again enjoy an Asian drama?
And fall in love with a Chinese xiaojie
Be besotted by a Korean agassi
Or enjoy celestial Chinese movie drama OST's?
Will I ever again enjoy an evening walk?
Gazing at the stars in a clear night?
Listening to the music of a bubbly brook?
Or watching the world from the top of a hill?
Will I ever again savor a meal?
Quench myself by a drink?
Crunch a tasty fruit?
And slurp a soup to delight?
Will I ever again know what it feels;
To have a beating heart?
To have a hopeful soul?
To have high spirits?
Will I? Will I ever again?
