FRAGMENTS

FRAGMENTS

We're the "lords" and "masters"
                                                                 They're the "servants",

So they said,

And from among us they came

These fragments

Canvassing for our "thumbs" to serve

We paused

We pondered

We wondered

This love

This passion

A child of our agitation?

We paused

We pondered

We wondered

They vowed faithfulness, milk and honey

They pledged loyalty, bread and butter
We paused

We pondered

We wondered

And like ants we filled out-

Defiling the elements,

Defiling our rumbling and riotous belly

And gave them our 'thumbs' to serve

But how soon they reneged

And they were our members

These fragments.

We sang same sour songs

We ate from same battered plates

We drank from same leaky cups

We slept on same loosening mat

Now we're two parallel lines

These fragments.

See them cruising on exotic wheels

Building castles on the hills
                                                                   Filling their tables with sumptuous

delicacies

And surrounding themselves with

ostentatious dainties

But here we are, forsaken

In our huts like hen,

Cattle or sheep confined in the pen

The roof letting in drizzles to a tide

Our tables empty and dry like a smoking

pipe

Our sole shoe  soles witnesses to scores
                                                                          of Yuletide

But these Pharoahs

This Egypt

We desire Moses's liberation and

We seek Joshua's lead to Rest.

About this poem

In Nigeria politics has become a lucrative business where those who had nothing before getting into political office suddenly become affluent. They go to the electorates with sugar-coated tongues to seek for votes to "serve"; but in reality their purpose of seeking political office is only to enrich themselves at the expense of the poor masses who continue to hope for a "saviour."
