Dear Turtle

Dear Turtle,

You started as my Turtle, poking out of your shell.
Now you're in your room on face time on your cell.

It’s hard to believe, that it wasn't long ago,
That you were barely talking, and Dora was your show.

You used to paint your nails and get polish on your hand.
But now you get them done, but not too long ‘cuz you're in band.

You used to sleep in the car, and I remember how relieved I'd feel.
But you cannot do that now, as you're the one behind the wheel.

The years have gone by fast, and now you're almost grown.
I cherish all the memories and each and every milestone.

Seasons will pass and times will change but one thing stays the same,
You're my sweet Madolyn Elise, and Turtle will always be your name.

Love,
Mom

About this poem

This was written for my daughter as her 15th birthday approached. I had a moment where I began reflecting on years passed and was overwhelmed by her incredible growth and change over time.

I like the rhyme and cadence, and it is so sweet. and so relatable to me as a mother, grandmother, and great grandmother who has watched and is watching many beloved children learn and grow into their individual selves.
