EVIL SECRETS

Phil Roberts 1957 (Melbourne)

Evil secrets of the night
Phantoms floating up ahigh,
Susurrations fill the air
As whispery shadows sigh.

Empty promises floating by
As darkling shades do fall,
When from the silent town
Chittering voices ever call.

Nightlings hunt the streets
For innocents out alone,
Revenants haunt the alleys
For stragglers heading home.

Night crawlers are slither
Around gutters and gully traps,
Leaving behind an acidic trail
Like some form of deadly frapp,

Skeletal warriors clankering
Through wooded glades or parks,
Refighting long-gone skirmishes
Throughout the moonless dark.

Evil secrets of the night
Besiege an exurban town,
Cuttlefish-like burrowers
Lurking just underground.

Scuttling sounds are heard
As giant arachnids weave,
Gigantic metallic strands
Around windows and eaves.

Batwings flapping nearby
As coffin-dwellers draw near,
Hoping to be allowed inside
Spreading bloody death and fear.
