Fallen Birds

N. Dale Smith 2001 (San Jose)

Words fall as birds in a poison sky
Striving to fall upon a caring ear
In the hope that their death might
Bring with it some meaning

These words which we utter
Are born without agency
Born without choice
Forced to reflect the desires of their creator

And all I can do is apologize
For their fate
 to never achieve
Their singular dream.

For forcing them to die
Having crashed only upon
Cracked soil
And broken souls

Perhaps it is not their fate
Which I should apologize for
But instead for ever having given them
The smallest glimpse of light
