Complexity

Michael Matalon 1973 (New York)

We start with a singularity, an energetic ignition
That brought forth particles with wild ambition

Boltzmann shows a tendency towards decay
As Newton’s second law will eloquently portray

Energy should dissipate and cool itself down
Instead it coalesces and forms itself round

The flow of time works in one direction
Yet entropy discharges into fruitful complexion

The bloom of life, from where does that arise?
We think of these questions to make ourselves wise.

But why does wisdom need to exist?
And why does knowledge always persist?

There’s a deeper mystery we need to explore
The order of complexity is unique at its core

The fuel of entropy is a cosmic idiom
That organizes itself towards equilibrium

Yet knowledge has value we didn’t foresee
As we rise above singular complexity

About this poem

What’s the opposite of entropy?
