Chess-piece of the gods

My whole world is a giant chessboard
Where the gods have their evening games
All my characters are chess pieces
And all my moves are calibrated

I am mostly a pawn
And helpless as a newborn fawn
My job is to be traded and bargained
The perfect sacrificial lamb

Other times I am a horse
Ridden at anyone's behest
Denied a straight path through life
They plain horse me around

Sometimes I am a bishop
With the cloth, holier than thou
But my piety is ridden roughshod
To protect those that lord it over me

I was once, a long time ago, a castle
Strong and well founded
But after years of heavy battering
I now lie in ruins

Someday I hope to be a queen
And enjoy the freedom of being
But for so long now
That has remained just a hope

Although denied even the hope
I long to become a king
To wear the crown
And lord it over all
