Cutting the Cord

cutting the cord (for Ryan)

you traveled life’s first journey
through the tight narrow tunnel
the bloody walls
the dark ravine
then out into the world
into the light
immediately inhaling this cyphered air
into your little lungs
and you breathed for the very first time

without any prodding you opened up your
mouth and screamed out into the room
a small but unmistakable  sound
then paused
stretching arms and legs out towards the sky
and seemed to listen for some familiar voice to respond

they scrubbed your head and face
wiping away the residue of all your past
we waited for the link to stop pulsing
and I thought how you traveled from life to life
how we must all travel from life to life
and I took scissors in hand to cut the cord

then
you became your own little soul
with arms and ears
eyes and toes to ponder
for fingers to be counted and features to be examined in depth

in that moment
we were all reborn
