New Year’s Eve

Convincing your dad to let u stay the night,
the happiness on your face
as I clap my hands excitedly
wishing this feeling stays forever-
walking in the winter chill,
holding hands in spirit because ;
no one else I'd rather begin a new year with.

Filming a spider-man reel,
calling random strangers at 2 am,
whining about a leather jacket’s price,
oh, aren’t we just a spectacle
but it’s so simple
so easy
so fun
to be that way
just for a while
because maybe one day,
it’ll be just me on New Year's Eve,
watching the fireworks alone while
you’re somewhere else
and someone else entirely;

but for now my dear friend stay with me, just as we are,
because tomorrow morning
is a new commencement
a time for new commitments!
Everything could change well, something definitely will
it always has.
But this particular time,
I wish it wouldn’t.

About this poem

This is a poem written as I was lying awake in the middle of the night worrying about what happens to highschool friendships once you graduate. The fear that things wont be the same, the hope that they will be.
