Ego Nihil Sum

Ego Nihil Sum
The nothing within.
Found in your essence
And under your skin.

"I am within you",
I cautiously whisper
As you consciously whimper
For a peace that cannot be found

For my presence can never be quelled
My insufferable silence, never dispelled
You feel me within
And suffer without
For I am everywhere and nowhere
Independent of doubt

Stay your footing
At the edge of the chasm
The agoraphobic pit
Of Tartarus, unfathomed

Stand at the edge
Staring down in the crevasse
Step not much further
Lest you be amassed

Among the many souls
I hath consumed
Be another, your corpse inhumed
In the infinite

Carve me from skin
And I gain
Leave me within
And I sustain
Pick at me
Scratch at me
Drown me in liquor
Gouge me
Lash me
Here I still linger
For at the end of my finger,
This accusatory baton
Lies thee, my subject, a miniscule pawn

Prostrate thyself before me
O ruler of none
O ruler of all
Of nothing and one

Bleed thyself upon mine altar
For you are beneath me
And thou shan't unseat me
Thy ruler of thee

Torture yourself as I torture you
Immolate before me, your scorcher
Do not die, for in you is my pleasure
Continue to endure, for you are my leisure

Flail upon your back
Mace in your visage
Pulled upon the rack
The pain blurs your vision

The points serrate the flesh
And eat into tissue
The shell peels back
To reveal each sinew

Limbs forced from their sockets
Nails rooted from beds
Stakes driven in joints
As the gangrene spreads

Burn up your feet
Gouge out your eyes
Peel back the lids
And feed them to flies

Dispose of your kidneys
Carve out your liver
Feel your hope wane
Along with your vigor

Up to your ankles in a pool of your filth
Those bodily fluids that hath yet been spilth

Vomit and urine
Blood and your tears
These are the sacraments
To the mass of your fears

Feel your decay
As you begin to rot
Wounds beyond healing,
Blood cannot clot

Finally you choose
A final end awaits
For to me you return
Regardless of fate

For to experience the nothing
One must first die
For in nonexistence lies
The nothing inside

Ego Nihil Sum.
I am nothing.
I am inside you.
You are nothing.

About this poem

I wrote this after recovering from a bout with some pretty serious delusions among various other mental illnesses. I found this, combined with influence from bands such as Black Tongue and Deafheaven, to be extremely cathartic and it aided me with my transition to medication and my eventual recovery.

Gareth Evans

I lived a pretty boring, vanilla childhood in the suburbs of Western Canada in a white, middle-class family. I have struggled my entire life with a series of inexplicable mental disorders, which conveniently make for absolutely fantastic creative writing material. I find myself writing rather grim poems, as well as death metal lyrics and figuring out accompanying licks on the drums. Recently, I've been recovering and focusing entirely on school, and as I'm pretty mentally stable, I haven't been writing much poetry. Oh, well. more…
