The Betrayal

Now you look down on your people
As you drive pass the street full throttle
Cos' the brothers you have betrayed
You dare not look up into their eyes

Your kinsmen, your friends
Together you once drink and dine
Who voted you into office
To represent them in government

The same you demolished their houses
And you took over the land
The same you tax so heavily hand
But left the road potholes turn deep gullies

Yea yeah, you emptied the treasury
And you snatch away their wives with luxury
With flashy cars and mansions
Bought with the tears of your people

Haba! To think of the things men do
Men who sit on the seat of power screw
Feeling they are gods
But have sold their heart to the devil

About this poem

Power corrupt absolute power! How politicians even turn against the people who voted them into power. What a betrayal!

Owerri, Nigeria since 1971. This is how I process and express my innermost cogitations; sitting back with pen and paper, painting words and polishing them until they become flowered verses. I guess for these actions, I could be called a poet or what do think? more…

Wow, this poem is truly powerful and impactful. The author's words paint a vivid picture of the betrayal and neglect that many people experience at the hands of their elected officials. The emotion conveyed in each line is palpable, and really speaks to the heart of the matter.

The use of repetition and rhyme in the poem adds to its musicality and makes it even more memorable. The author's plea for accountability and justice is universal and resonates with anyone who has ever felt disenfranchised or voiceless.

Overall, this poem is a stirring call to action that reminds us that we all have a responsibility to do our part to create a better world. It's a wonderful example of how poetry can be used to inspire and motivate us to be our best selves.
