Foggy the Cat

Needing escape from the mournful howls,
The smell of death; the human growls
I grabbed my things and decided to leave
When a soft little paw, snagged my sleeve.

He'd done this before, just a few days ago
His color was fog-mist, with sprinkles of snow
But today he was thinner; like fog after noon
He hadn't been eating; his time would come soon.

The swelling of tears stopped clouding my eyes
He gave me new hope, in a world I despise
Just one of a million cats killed every year...
But they wouldn't get 'Foggy'! He wouldn't die here!

I made up my mind to take this small cat
As soon as I could, and give his life back
From cage to a cuddle; and a promise in his ear...
"You'll just need to spend one last night here".

"I promise tomorrow, I'll come take you home".
I promised him "never will you die alone".
"Starting tomorrow, your life will be great!"
But sometimes 'tomorrow' is one day too late.

Sometimes tomorrow, is one day too late.

About this poem

It's hard not to fall in love with some shelter animals when you're volunteering. And even those who swear to themselves that they will not adopt every animal that touches their heart, will probably find themselves breaking that oath to themselves, every once in awhile. This is a true story about a cat I fell in love with and had planed to adopt. But at that time, the shelter was not 'no kill' and the manager certainly wasn't.. Things have improved since then.

Funny how...not often, but on rare occasion, we find a poet ...or poetry which enables us a window to our own souls through the stream of thought in another person's words. Not considering myself a cat person, not considering this a cat poem. Spiritual.

Wow, this is such a powerful and heartfelt poem. I love the way it portrays the narrator's compassion and determination to save the little cat, despite the overwhelming sadness and despair around them. The imagery is vivid and haunting, and it really draws you into the scene.

One suggestion for improvement could be to vary the rhythm and cadence of the lines a bit more, to create more musicality and flow. Some of the lines feel a bit choppy and uneven, which can disrupt the overall reading experience. However, this is a minor critique, and overall, the poem is fantastic in its emotional impact and message. Well done!

This poem was dearly touching, and I am so sorry to hear what ended up happening. I have been through a similar situation while volunteering at an animal shelter, and this poem beautifully portrayed the scenario and the many emotions contained. I truly wish this poem could be read by many others.

Thank you Christina. I wish more people would (like you), experience volunteering in an animal shelter, and feel it for themselves. Many high points as well as low. Just being able to cuddle with a cat or take a dog to the playground...even if it's the last connection to kindness they feel; at least they 'felt' it. Looking back at those days...I believe it was time, very well spent.

This poem contains the exact amount of elements needed for it to be considered a work of art. Keep the good writing going please.

    P.S.
I'm not quite sure but I think I made a mistake. I'm trying to click 5 stars but it's not working and suddenly it worked out of blue but looks like it was 3 stars that had been clicked? (not sure though) I tried to click 5 stars again but I was informed that I am only allowed to vote once. If that's exactly what had happened, I would like to sincerely apologize for my mistake. But rest assured that your work deserves 5 stars and there's no doubt about that.

One of these days maybe I'll try to write something that makes people smile; like you have successfully achieved. But I guess if I'm able to evoke ANY type of emotion in a person...well...my work here is done :). Thank you for your recognition. I admire your work very much!

A true poet who understands the beauty and expression of the written word. I'm also quite happy no dogs were harmed during the conception of this prize-winning creation. Congrats, my friend. Well deserved.

On a serious note - you're an exceptionally gifted writer. On the other hand, you're an even better person. I'm glad to know you my friend.

Strangely enough, it was the last line that resonated with me. In fact, I think it is worthy of a poem itself! I read this, then went on to read others and yet I came back to this one. I feel remiss in knowing I will not have the time to read them all :-( and I should have started sooner. Next time I will. My apologies to my colleagues I short changed! :-(

My heart aches because of the fate of the kitty, and also for animal and human alike for whom "tomorrow is one day too late"--a fate that awaits us all.
