Dog Park

Dog owners of all ages, wages, and rages have gathered at the
dog park today under the gross misconception that dogs love
dog parks because it gives them an opportunity to run leash-free.

Truth is, dogs are excited to go to a dog park because it gives them the
opportunity to gossip and compare notes about their owners.

Witness the Welsh Corgi over there prancing around the Doberman,
most likely she is not initiating a mating dance, more likely she
is giving the Doberman an earful about her vegan owner
and the absence of meat in her bowl.

And the black Labrador Retriever, the one wearing a flinching frown,
no way is he interested in retrieving a slobbered tennis ball just tossed
by its owner, why he's too busy telling a Cocker Spaniel about the
lack of belly rubs he gets at home.

Naturally the Spaniel nods in agreement, lifting its soft, pendulous ears
in a show of attentive empathy, but unbeknownst to the Lab, the Spaniel only
understands Spanish and has no idea what the Lab is blabbering about.

And then, of course, there is no finer whiner than the Weimaraner
venting vexation that his owner never takes him on family vacations.

At the end of the day, there isn't a breed, creed, or pedigree
that doesn't have something to get off their furry chests now and then,
and a dog park is the perfect venue to do so.

So if you are a dog owner and do bring your dog to a dog park
for exercise or play time, do pay closer attention next time and you'll see
for yourself that your dog wags his tongue more than his tail.

About this poem

I recently pet sat for someone's dog which I took to a dog park and, watching the dogs interact with each other, got the humorous notion that the dogs are talking about their owners.
