Coleman had been Columbus City Council president for three years when he won his first mayoral election in 1999. He said during that time, he was smoking a pack or more of menthol cigarettes a day.

Mike Coleman is the most successful Black political leader in Columbus history. His career provided a road map for his protégé, Shannon Hardin. Then the world changed.
