Uphill Benue

Simon Valentine 1996 (Abeokuta South)

Uphill Benue
The sunset sketched our car so perfect
Even relentless while we climbed to Benue
Our emotions discussed with our thoughts
Even though our belief mediated for truce
Uphill Benue
Our sight is recited again by the distance
And our prearranged pleasantry waited in patience
On motion with emotions we're packed
The sense of fufilling a profitable clarion call
Uphill Benue
Barrows are accompanied bumper to bumper
By worn-out men wrapped in patched sacks
And women dragging along hoes and children
With footwears that expose the history of her melancholy
Uphill Benue
Where the pride of the driveway is littered with punctures
And the truth of leadership weaved only into signposts
As we match on wheels to the progress of fate
The taste of our own victory becomes our cool breeze
Uphill Benue
Where the trees witness our journey
And still fed our eyes with the fruits of life
With the chant of bathed cassava inhaled
We remember the slogan that she has earned
Uphill Benue
Where we rushed in slow speed to points
Where the military in whiles punctuate our scores
The scores that remind us of that waiting place
Such place where we all wanted to be.
