Lessons

Leslie Kay Lanham 1960 (West Virginia)

August 22

Standing, watching Camelot burn,
  a tragedy all around -
A broken king, his crumpled queen,
  in pieces on the ground.
The world they knew stopped turning,
  game-set-match, it’s done -
And truth be told, we never knew,
  their ending had begun.
The little prince and princess,
will grow up strong and true -
They’ll dream of love that never ends,
  like fairytales often do.
And as the weary king and queen,
  move on their separate ways-
They’ll gather strength from deep inside,
  to face the coming days.
Their world will slowly turn again,
though not quite as before -
For lessons learned, when Camelot burned,
  will last forevermore.

About this poem

The heartache and surprise of watching the demise of the “perfect” family. A tragedy of lost love.

This poem was very similar to my own writing style...only you captured everything I've tried to capture for the last 66-years, in one poem. Keep it up girlfriend! I believe in you (us :).

I just read this again Leslie, and It is absolutely flawless as far as form goes. The message; with it's metaphorical imagery is very profound. To me, this a 'top notch' poem!
