It Shall Be Done!

Hkelvin 1967 (Singapore)

August 22
Ode

I once chanced upon a river that was feeling so stuck and dejected
Its body was rubbish bloated and its free flow was stagnated.
Umpteen times it tried to get back its natural rhythm, but alas, it amounted to no effect
Quietly it bowed its head and succumbed to being less than perfect.
Sadly, I observed and wonderedcould its rhythm be restored?

I once chanced upon a sea that was majestic and adorned with its deep blue color
With unprecedented abuse, it lost its luster.
It was no longer its original self, for black content had permeated its surface
Where sea creatures’ lives are endangered by the act of menace.
Sadly, I observed and wonderedcould its life-giving environment be restored?

I once chanced upon a thick forest that was substantially depleted of its natural growth
Its natural habitat waning away, much that it might loath.
It used to be green, towering, and clustered like an impenetrable fortress
Its mission as a conducive place for wildlife habitat seemed at best porous.
Sadly, I observed and wonderedcould its greenery be restored?

I once chanced upon a place sprawling with glaciers that stood magnificently
The accelerating warm environment had sent it melting unconditionally.
Cold but a beautiful landscape, a piece of nature's formidable creation
But changing its form was never its intention!
Sadly, I observed and wonderedcould its magnificence be restored?

I once chanced upon a village that was densely populated
With imminent rising death, the passing on of those living was much awaited.
Without enough food and clean water, their survival was just a time to borrow
Life on earth was but a sorrow.
Sadly, I observed and wonderedcould its dignity be restored?

Sadly, I observed and wondered, ever tossing it in my mind…
One day, much to my illumination, burst forth this thought as a sure sign
If all these human acts are not ground to a halt, tomorrow will all be the same
Today is the time to set it aflame.
Alone, my thought effect is but a drop in the ocean
Until people in the world come together and make this our new moment.
The hope of humanity is still not lost, for we are all one
From now onwards, we all declare it shall be done.

About this poem

Humanity and its environment are subjected to great abuse for many decades. Through this poem, I hope it can bring about our unison to do what we feel is right.

As a kid, I lived in a kampong village. When I walked out of my house, I was in touch with nature. Now, I live in a flat. It is so different because I cannot come close to nature. I can only see trees planted by man and not those that grew naturally. more…
