Epistle to Ma—Address: Beneath\Above Earth.

       Epistle to Ma—Address: Beneath/Above Earth.

I miss the bone of my
Bone & flesh of my flesh

My very gentle potter
Hands soft as silk
Voice as a soft flow of mango
Juice down the pharynx.
I miss the love of my life

With a lump in my heart I
Confess that my memory fails me—
I have just hazy photos of you like
Our old lantern that always flickered;
Your voice is now a dream I’ll give all
To remember, like a stubborn word                Dangling at the tip of my tongue—                                          Joy is now a strange tongue

I hope you receive this letter, Ma.
I write to you with my tears & beg you:

Visit me in my sleep,
one last time.
I crave to have my fingers comb your hair,             one last time.
Call me auta & johnna( Joh-nahh)
one last time.
Get angry, drum at my back, twist my ears,
one last time.

Breathe...one last time.

Before you blow to oblivion & die
A final death ( our old lamp died, eventually)
Like grandma’s wind-obsessed corn chaffs,
Before the favour of the weak whisper in the wind
I get as a response dies to a sickening stillness       & the hazy pictures be as a                         windowless room in a moonless night,

I swear to love & cherish & cherish & love
You—till we meet to part no more.

                                                                        Love,

                                                                       Johnna.

About this poem

This poem is an unedited outpouring of my emotions—my fears and ache— when I realized the memories of my mum ( died 2012) were becoming fainter by the day. It was like I was loosing her again.
