Childish Voice

Patricia Ruhaak 1988 (United States)

Childish voice

Rough around the edges
You didn’t have a choice
A little girl who fell through the cracks
Where self defense became your childish voice

Raised in poverty and violence
Taught that survival was silence
You hid the bruises and the hunger
You told the world that you were fine
the internal storm was booming thunder

You were lost in the tempest
The only thing you ever knew
Blue ribbons flying in the raging wind
As the intensity grew

Your childhood became you
The techniques you learned to survive
You lashed and fought the world
The survival was your guide

Your demons walked beside you
A shadow right behind view
You never had a chance
You never had a choice
The shadows overcame you,
you lost your childish voice.

About this poem

This poem was written in grief for the memories of a childhood friend who was taken from this world. We had a falling out, we grew apart, we became women with our own lives, but I’ll keep the memories of our childhood with me.
