Trained To Lie And Make Excuses

Lawrence S. Pertillar 1947 (Connecticut)

Uhmmm...
Before you continue on,
With your poetry reading.
Isn't there more you could say,
About people who are trained to lie.
And make excuses?

'I suppose I could.
And I knew that particular poem,
Would be objected by the ones...
Who suspect I am talking directly to them.'

Well?
Are you?

'You folks know yourselves better than I do.
I was invited here to do a poetry reading.
Not listen to deniers.
Read minds.
Nor discuss confessions.
With a promise to keep what I hear discreet!'

Up Pops Buddy's Weasel

'Now...
This poem I recently wrote,
Is about Buddy and his friend Weasel.
And his determination to explain...
Things happen.
Without having control over it.
Since he and Weasel have been together,
Attached.
To notice this all of their lives.
With a feeling of permanence!
But as Buddy grew older,
Weasel also grew more impulsive.
And yes...
Temperamental as well.'
