The Lake of Avalon

This is the story of a grand night out,
and I’ll tell you now how it goes.
For on this eve of his walkabout;
Our man ambled to his door quite slow.

He went out from his old house
Onto a country lane
He went out without a doubt
For he knew his way.

Through the forests and the hills
To a clearing in the trees
Where roots of silver birch pierce the earth
And pollen rides the breeze
 
Water lapped tree roots as he took of his boots
And his toes felt moss and dirt
And he walked to the lake with a purposeful stride
As he felt the sand instead of the earth.

Down to the quay he walked that day, on the lakeside shore
Down to the boat he’d tied away, and he climbed aboard
He set sail across the orange waves, as the sun set in the sky
He’d arranged it all that way at least that’s how he felt inside.

As the ship approached the far shore
A hand reached up from the waves
It’s a sight he’d seen before
But it’s a sight he always craves
 
For in the Lake of Avalon
There she had come to rest
For though her mortal life had come and gone
Their love had stood the test


So on the shores of Avalon
He threw pennies in the lake
And if a penny washed back to the bank
Its’ steel would never break.

 
So he drove his bow into the sand
And tied up to the nearest tree
And of all the places in all the land
There’s no place that he would rather be.

So he pitched a tent under a field of stars
And watched as the moon came out
And despite all the scars of this man of ours
She knew she’d never go without.

 
For in the Lake of Avalon
There she had come to rest
For though her mortal life had come and gone
Their love had stood the test

So on the shores of Avalon
He threw pennies in the lake
And if a penny washed back to the bank
Its’ steel would never break.

So on this night one of many spent
On the banks of Avalon
He’d never knew that this old night
Was the night the kingdom was won.

For when dragon’s breath burns castle walls
And steel falls on shields in war
Then she’ll rise from the lake once again
To hand him Xcalibur.
