The way of love

Royston 1946 (Reading)

Moment by moment a sinless life He led
and they placed a crown of thorns on his head.
Lash by lash the whip tore down to the bone
and scourged He stood before them all alone.

Step by step He climbed up Golgotha’s hill
determined to fulfil His Fathers’ will.
One by one my sins upon Him were laid
and by His sacrifice my debt He paid.

Blow by blow, wicked nails were driven in.
‘twas the only way to save us from sin.
Inch by inch they lifted the cross on high
with Jesus upon it, and watched Him die.

Drop by drop the life giving blood was shed
from His wounded side and hands, feet and head.
Breath by breath He tried hard to breathe,
and His last breath He used to intercede.

Bit by bit the price for sin He had paid
as He took them all down into the grave.
Then in splendid triumph He arose
in glorious victory o’er His foes.

About this poem

1 Corinthians 13 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonour others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
