wekiwa

I loved everything around you,

cool blue and sickening green,

I worry we might freeze together.

and sink to the bottom as debris.

I avoid your gaze that day,

as if your eyes had the power,

to whittle away what I know of myself.

Instead of you I turn to the woman by the water,

she is alone and drawing,

I imagine myself as her,

in a long linen dress that sticks to my skin.

You wonder if she is a monk,

I tell you that is ridiculous,

and pull you closer,

scared of the unknown depths below.

I think she might be drawing us, I say.

he disagrees.

it would be fitting,

we belonged in two dimensions.

We drift further,

our numb hands intertwined.

The shore seems so far- but this is only a spring.

I could stay here forever with you if I wanted to.

you would let me,

but we have nothing to say.
