Roots of a Honeysuckle Bush

I’m from the soft blades of grass

in between my toes

And the red dirt that I never touched with my hands

I’m from humidity and confliction

Both outside the house and at the core

I’m from long car rides and confusion

Sleeping in Walmart parking lots

I’m from no Halloween costumes and no furniture

But I’m also from the smell of closed books as they
opened

New opportunities arising

Fueling my imagination and sparking interest in greatness

I’ve always wanted to stand out

Not sit down

Like a honeysuckle bush amidst weeds and dandelions

I want to be seen

I want to explore like my childhood feet

Run through this world barefooted

But I keep stepping on fire ant hills

No matter what I do

The stinging pain and ambition will not cease.

About this poem

This poem is about growing up poor in rural Alabama. This poem is not about the pain wrought from my hardships, instead it is about how perseverance through struggles can foster positive growth, and can serve as passionate motivation. I see my childhood as an advantage, I've seen life in a different way than many people I know today, and expressing that unique perspective is important to me.

Harrison Kennedy

I'm 17 years old, still in high school, still young, and still naïve. But I love poetry, and I love to write. My experiences have value, and I hope to do justice to my achievements and struggles through my writing. I am a researcher at a large university, observer of surgeries at my local hospital, and a partaker in learning. I'm here to learn, and to write. more…
